About this tool

A PDF records where each character is drawn rather than what a paragraph is, which is why you cannot click into a sentence and retype it the way you would in Word. What you can do, and what almost everyone actually needs, is add text on top: a name, a date, a reference number, a correction or a label. Click on the page preview to place it, choose the size and color, and pick which pages it applies to. Non-Latin scripts including Devanagari are rendered as sharp text images so Hindi and other languages work rather than appearing as boxes. For changing existing wording throughout a document, the practical route is converting to Word, editing, then exporting back to PDF, accepting that the layout will shift. For removing sensitive text, use the redaction tool, because drawing a black box over words leaves the words in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change text that is already in the PDF?

Not directly. PDFs store character positions rather than editable paragraphs. Add text on top, or convert to Word, edit and convert back.

Does it support Hindi and other scripts?

Yes. Text outside the standard Latin range is rendered as a sharp image so it appears correctly rather than as empty boxes.

How do I position the text precisely?

Click on the page preview where you want it, then fine tune with the left and top percentage boxes or the arrow keys.

Can I change existing text?

PDFs don't store text like a Word file, so this tool adds new text on top. To change wording throughout, convert with PDF to Word, edit, then convert back.

Is Edit PDF - Add Text free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Edit PDF - Add Text runs entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device and nothing is stored - close the tab and everything is gone.

Which file types can I use?

PDF. Files are checked by their actual content, not just the extension, so renamed or damaged files are caught early.

Is there a file size limit?

Each file can be up to 200.0 MB, and you can process up to 20 files at once. Because processing uses your device's memory, very large files work best on a computer.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. Heavier jobs (large PDFs, OCR) are faster on a computer.
