The United States uses one square shape for both passports and visas, but the file you need depends on where it is going. US visa photos are square, and the Diversity Visa lottery spells out the digital file exactly: a JPEG of 600 by 600 pixels, 240 KB or smaller. That is this tool's default output, saved at 235 KB at most so it clears the limit; if your visa form shows a different size, check it before uploading. Paper passport applications and renewals by mail need a printed photo of 2 by 2 inches, with your head measuring 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to the top of the hair; switch Photo size to the 2×2 inch print, or pick the 4×6 sheet to print copies at a pharmacy or at home. Online passport renewal is different: the State Department asks for the original, unedited photo from your phone or camera, as a JPG, PNG or HEIC file between 54 KB and 10 MB, and says not to alter it with software. For that, take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall and upload it as it is. Everywhere, the photo must be in color, taken in the last six months, without glasses, filters or retouching.
