About this tool

JPEG compression works by discarding detail the eye is poor at noticing, particularly fine color variation. That is why a photograph can lose most of its file size and still look identical on screen, while a screenshot of text compressed the same way shows fuzzy halos around letters. For ordinary photographs, quality 75 is a sensible balance and typically cuts a phone picture from 4 MB to a few hundred kilobytes. Above 90 the savings shrink quickly with little visible gain; below 50 the blockiness starts to show in smooth areas like skies and skin. One warning worth repeating: JPEG is lossy every time it is saved, so repeatedly compressing the same file degrades it step by step. Work from the original whenever you can. If the picture contains text or sharp graphics, PNG or WEBP will serve you better. For a hard upload limit, the fixed-size tools aim for a target in kilobytes rather than a quality number.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing a JPG reduce its dimensions?

No. The pixel size stays the same unless you set the optional width limit. Only the amount of stored detail changes.

Can I compress the same photo twice?

You can, but each pass loses more detail permanently. Always start from the original file rather than a previously compressed copy.

How do I hit an exact size like 100 KB?

Use Compress Image to 100 KB. It searches for the best quality that fits and only reduces dimensions if quality alone cannot reach the target.

Is Compress JPG free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no usage limit.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Compress JPG runs entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device and nothing is stored - close the tab and everything is gone.

Which file types can I use?

JPG. Files are checked by their actual content, not just the extension, so renamed or damaged files are caught early.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It works in modern mobile browsers on Android and iPhone. Heavier jobs (large PDFs, OCR) are faster on a computer.
