About this tool

Image compression trades detail for size, and the art is in giving up detail nobody can see. At the default quality of 75, a typical phone photograph loses 60 to 90 percent of its file size with no difference visible on a screen. Fine detail suffers first, which is why the setting matters more for text and diagrams than for landscapes. Each format behaves differently. JPG discards detail by design and compresses photographs extremely well. PNG is lossless, so its savings come from reducing the number of colors, which works beautifully for logos and screenshots and badly for photographs. WEBP usually beats JPG by 25 to 35 percent at similar quality. Animated GIFs are handled frame by frame with the animation preserved. You can compress up to 50 images at once and download the results as a ZIP. If a file cannot be made smaller without harm, the original is kept rather than handing back something larger, which is a surprisingly common failing elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

What quality setting should I use?

75 is a good default for photographs and is usually indistinguishable from the original on screen. Use 85 or higher for images with text, and lower only when a file size limit forces it.

Does compressing reduce the dimensions?

Not unless you ask. Quality is reduced first. There is a separate option to cap the width, and the fixed-size tools shrink dimensions only when quality alone cannot reach the target.

Can I compress many images at once?

Yes, up to 50 per batch. Each is processed independently, so one failure does not stop the rest, and you can download everything as a single ZIP.

How much smaller will my image get?

Typical phone photos shrink 60–90% at the default setting with no visible difference on screen.

Why is the result sometimes the same size?

If the original is already well optimised, we keep it rather than give you a bigger or worse file.
