Every authority publishes its own photo rules. Size is the easy part; lighting, expression and background matter just as much.

Getting a clean background
Stand about half a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing a window. Avoid shadows behind you. Our Passport Photo Maker can then replace a plain wall with pure white by detecting the background colour from the edges of the photo. It's deliberately simple: it works well on plain walls and won't cleanly cut you out of a busy room.
Printing
Choose the 4×6 inch sheet option. You'll get several copies at exact size with thin cut guides, rendered at 300 DPI. Any photo lab or home photo printer can print a 4×6 — just make sure “fit to page” or scaling is turned off.
