About this tool
Counting words sounds trivial until you try it in more than one language. Splitting on spaces breaks down for scripts that do not separate words the same way, which is why this counter uses your browser's built-in language-aware segmentation. Hindi, Tamil and other Indic scripts are counted correctly, as are numbers, hyphenated words and contractions. Alongside words you get characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and estimated reading and speaking times. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute, an average from reading research, and speaking time assumes 150 words per minute, the usual guide for presentations. Character counts matter for practical limits: 280 for a post on X, 160 for a single SMS, around 160 for a meta description that will not be truncated in search results. Everything updates as you type and nothing is transmitted anywhere, which makes it safe for confidential drafts. For counting the words in a document file rather than pasted text, use the document word count tool.
